Mobile's interstate traffic can be tough to avoid in the Summer and major holidays.
Here are some tips:

  • 1. Summer traffic is tough to avoid while traveling through Mobile. There are normally delays at the Wallace Tunnel on I-10 between late May and Early September.
The best days to travel through Mobile are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the worst days.
-Friday traffic: Delays are mostly on the Eastbound side of I-10 between 2 PM and 6:30 PM. Delays usually span 2-4 miles.
-Saturday traffic: Westbound delays begin around 10 AM and end around 5 PM. Delays usually span 8-12 miles.
Eastbound delays begin around 11 AM and end around 5 PM. Delays usually span 2-4 miles.
-Sunday traffic: Delays are mostly Westbound between 10 AM and end around 5 PM. Delays usually span 5-10 miles.
Eastbound delays begin around 12 PM and end around 4 PM. Delays usually span 2-3 miles.
-Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday delays are normally Eastbound only. Delays begin around 3 PM and end at 6:30 PM. Delays usually span 3-4 miles.

  • 2. Holiday traffic outside of Summer travel is mainly Thanksgiving and Christmas. Traffic will mimic Summer travel delays depending what day these holidays actually fall on.

  • 3. US 98 (Moffett Rd) is also heavily traveled in the Summer time. Delays usually occur on Saturday only through Wilmer and Semmes. US 98 is a two-lane road between Mississippi and Snow Rd in Semmes; that's more than 10 miles.
Delays are Eastbound only and occur between 10 AM and 4 PM.

  • 4. Accidents would obviously make delays longer. Check your route before you leave or have your navigator check often.

  • 5. Labor Day is undoubtedly the worst day to travel Westbound through Mobile on I-10. The delays usually span 20-30 miles ending at the Wallace Tunnel.

  • 6. In addition to the Wallace Tunnel delays, the Bayway (Jubilee Parkway) is a 7.5 mile bridge between the Wallace Tunnel and the city of Daphne. The Bayway is well-known for it's accidents and delays as well.
Most locals like to take the low-road instead of the bridge. The low-road is called "The Causeway" (US 90/US 98). Causeway drivers often use the Bankhead Tunnel to enter downtown Mobile. Accidents are more likely to occur on the Bayway than in the Wallace Tunnel or on the Causeway.
